Chapter 67: So It Was Ye Tianlin’s Doing
After leaving the deputy general manager's office, Su Rulan immediately felt much more at ease. Commander Ma devoted all his energy to work. Having previously worked at the Su family’s company, Su Rulan was naturally very familiar with a secretary’s duties. She quickly adapted, handling all the spot-checked tasks with practiced ease and efficiency.
As for Su Weimin and Gao Yulan, they dared not slack off in the slightest, fearing they might lose these hard-won jobs. They threw themselves into researching materials and familiarizing themselves with their duties.
Time passed quickly in this way, and soon it was noon.
Chen Zhigang, always punctual, was the first to exit his office. He called over Su Rulan and her family and said, “Let’s set aside our work for now. I doubt President Ye will be coming in this morning. Come with me to the cafeteria for lunch.”
“That’s just what I needed!” Su Weimin’s stomach had been growling for a while already.
“The Yunhai Chamber of Commerce’s lunch must be quite lavish, right?” Gao Yulan asked.
Chen Zhigang chuckled. “Absolutely. Our Yunhai Chamber of Commerce has the Beijing Consortium as its backer. The food in our cafeteria is no worse than what you’d find in a star-rated hotel!”
“You all go ahead; I still have some work to finish. I’ll eat on my own later,” Su Rulan waved her hand. Even though Chen Zhigang had already clarified things face-to-face, she was a married woman and felt it was best to keep a respectable distance whenever possible.
Fortunately, Chen Zhigang didn’t press the matter. He simply led Su Weimin and Gao Yulan off, laughing and chatting as they headed for the cafeteria.
One after another, the rest of the department’s staff left as well, leaving the area empty and quiet.
Su Rulan stayed behind, diligently organizing documents, her concentration evident. She’d already gained a clear understanding of the department’s structure. The Beijing Consortium had founded the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce, which managed a multitude of assets. As it was still in its early days, many business assets needed to be sorted out and integrated.
Moreover, all external projects of the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce would, from now on, be handled directly by the business department. No matter the size of the project, without the business department’s approval and signature, no one could hope to slip anything past them.
Just as Su Rulan was busy moving back and forth, a familiar voice suddenly sounded behind her, interrupting her thoughts.
“Wife!”
Su Rulan turned around and saw Ye Tianlin walking in from outside the department.
“Tianlin, what are you doing here? Did you pass your interview?” Su Rulan’s face blossomed into a sweet smile as she hurried over to greet him.
Ye Tianlin nodded slightly, surveying the department’s surroundings. “Actually, I interviewed a couple of days ago. I’m in the same department as you.”
“You interviewed earlier? Why didn’t you say anything?” Su Rulan was surprised, but more than that, she was delighted.
Ye Tianlin gave a wry smile. “I was worried your parents wouldn’t believe me. Every time I say something, they think I’m bragging, so I played it close to the vest this time. There was a traffic jam just now, so I was late.”
“Late? What do you mean?” Su Rulan was momentarily confused.
Ye Tianlin raised his hand and pointed to an office. “Didn’t I have someone notify them that I’d be coming by for a spot check? But now everyone’s gone to lunch—how am I supposed to check anything? Though honestly, the spot check was just an excuse. The real reason was to give you a surprise.”
Hearing this, Su Rulan was thunderstruck, her face drained of color.
The office Ye Tianlin pointed to was, unmistakably, the general manager’s office of the business department!
“President Ye… you’re not saying you’re our department’s general manager, are you?” Su Rulan was utterly shocked.
“Why not? With my credentials as the young master of the Ye family, wouldn’t it be strange if I couldn’t land the position of a mere department general manager at the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce? Surely you’re not underestimating me too, are you?” Ye Tianlin said with a laugh.
“That’s not what I meant. I couldn’t be happier for you, Tianlin, to have this position,” Su Rulan’s expression softened. It did make sense—Ye Tianlin was, after all, the young master. Getting a department manager’s job should be a piece of cake for him.
Thinking further, Su Rulan suddenly realized, “Was it really you who helped me get into the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce, not Chen Zhigang?”
“It was me. No matter who interviewed you, you would have passed in the end. It was just a coincidence that people thought it was Chen Zhigang’s doing. I didn’t explain last night because I didn’t want you to overthink it. I know you don’t want me to interfere,” Ye Tianlin replied.
“Tianlin, this is different. I’m overjoyed, not angry. I’ve been feeling awkward this whole time, thinking it was Chen Zhigang’s help,” Su Rulan was deeply moved.
Ye Tianlin smiled with relief, but before he could say more, footsteps sounded outside.
It was Chen Zhigang, returning from the cafeteria with Su Weimin and Gao Yulan.
Su Weimin, after a hearty meal, was belching contentedly, a trace of oil still on his lips, his face beaming with satisfaction. But the moment he saw Ye Tianlin, his expression changed dramatically. He rushed over, grabbed Ye Tianlin, and hissed, “You rascal, what are you doing here? Trying to embarrass me again?”
Gao Yulan hurried over as well, shooting him a look. “Ye Tianlin, you’d better get back home. Don’t make trouble here. We still have work to do and can’t look after you.”
“Dad, Mom, what are you talking about? Tianlin passed the interview—of course he can stay!” Su Rulan exclaimed.
Su Weimin and Gao Yulan both stared at Ye Tianlin in disbelief.
This guy, with his own abilities, actually managed to get a job at the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce?
“Rulan, and this is…?” Chen Zhigang walked over, sizing up Ye Tianlin.
Su Rulan took Ye Tianlin’s arm and replied, “This is my husband, Ye Tianlin.”
Seeing the gesture, Chen Zhigang’s eye twitched slightly, but he forced a smile and said, “So you’re Rulan’s husband. I’d heard you weren’t well. But I just heard you’ve joined the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce?”
“My husband’s been well for a while now. We just hadn’t mentioned it,” Su Rulan replied firmly.
Chen Zhigang made a dismissive sound in his mind, thinking this was nothing more than a minor character, someone he could deal with easily as deputy general manager. As for Su Rulan, no matter how she tried to fly away, she’d never escape his grasp.
Feigning concern, Chen Zhigang asked, “So, Ye Tianlin, what position did you land? I should look after you, after all. I am the deputy general manager here—second only to the top. And Rulan is now my secretary!”
