After a brief encounter, Su Rulan’s composure remained undisturbed; she quickly calmed herself. This interview was undoubtedly her last chance, and no matter what, she was determined to secure a position at Yunhai Chamber of Commerce through her own efforts—even if it was just an ordinary job.

In contrast, Su Weimin and Gao Yulan grew increasingly discouraged. Their faces betrayed a lack of confidence, and they kept muttering that there was no hope, insisting that they were too old and didn’t want to embarrass themselves by going in. Su Rulan was nearly exasperated to death, trying to persuade them repeatedly, but it was futile; the couple was adamant they would be eliminated, and saw no point in attending the interview.

With no other choice, Su Rulan reluctantly agreed, letting them wander nearby while she finished her interview and would pick them up afterwards.

After more than two hours of agonizing waiting, it was finally Su Rulan’s turn. Holding her resume and documents, she heard the interviewer call her name. She composed herself, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open.

Inside the spacious interview room sat a young man, upright and dignified in a sharp suit, exuding the air of a successful professional. When she saw his face, Su Rulan was momentarily stunned—she instantly recognized him as her university class monitor.

“Chen Zhigang?” Su Rulan blurted out in surprise.

Chen Zhigang looked up, equally astonished to see her. He even rose to his feet, his voice filled with disbelief. “Rulan, is that really you?”

“I—I’m here for the interview,” Su Rulan replied awkwardly, placing her resume on the desk.

Chen Zhigang gestured for her to sit, quickly inviting her to take a seat before he sat opposite. He didn’t dive straight into the interview, instead scrutinizing Su Rulan’s appearance, his brows furrowing tighter as he observed her.

“Rulan, I heard you got married, and things haven’t been going well lately. Your husband is sick, isn’t he?” Chen Zhigang’s gaze lingered on her slightly rounded belly.

Under his stare, Su Rulan felt uncomfortable and hastily tried to redirect the conversation. “I’m here for the interview. Let’s focus on the main topic.”

But Chen Zhigang didn’t even glance at her resume. He straightforwardly assured her, “Since we’re old classmates and I was your class monitor, of course I’ll help you. I’m now the Deputy General Manager of the Business Department at Yunhai Chamber of Commerce. You can rest easy with this interview!”

“You’re the Deputy General Manager of the Business Department at Yunhai Chamber of Commerce?” Su Rulan was shocked.

Chen Zhigang adjusted his collar with a smile. “That’s right. After graduating, I went abroad for further studies and got involved with the Capital Consortium. When Yunhai Chamber of Commerce was established in Jiangnan, I was sent back for this position.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to look at my resume first?” Su Rulan swallowed, overwhelmed by his generosity.

“There’s no need for all that. It’s just a formality. With my status, getting you in is easy. Even for the next round, you can skip it and be directly admitted. Just go home and wait for the news!” Chen Zhigang shook his head confidently, his words full of assurance.

“Class monitor, thank you so much. This job means everything to me.” Su Rulan immediately stood and bowed deeply to him.

“Oh, come now, no need to be so formal with me. It’s only right to look out for you, especially since your husband’s illness is slow to heal. You, expecting a child, have to venture out to find work—it’s really tough for you.” Chen Zhigang pressed his hand down to stop her.

“My husband, he—” Su Rulan tried to explain, but Chen Zhigang cut her off before she could finish.

He straightened his collar and spoke solemnly, “Enough, I understand your difficulties. No need to put on a brave face for me. Once you join, I’ll take special care of you. As your old class monitor, I can’t just stand by and watch you suffer. When I have time, I’ll visit your parents as well.”

Ten minutes later.

Su Rulan left Yunhai Chamber of Commerce, feeling as if she’d passed in a daze; it was like a dream.

Just then, Su Weimin and Gao Yulan hurried over from nearby. As soon as they met, Su Weimin was the first to ask, “Rulan, finished with the interview? How did it go?”

“I passed. Chen Zhigang interviewed me,” Su Rulan replied, still dazed.

Gao Yulan pinched her chin, instantly recalling, and exclaimed excitedly, “Could it be your university class monitor, Chen Zhigang? I remember that boy; he pursued you back then, even came to our house with gifts, but you didn’t accept him at the time.”

“I remember too. Who’d have thought Chen Zhigang would be at Yunhai Chamber of Commerce? What’s his position now?” Su Weimin asked curiously.

“Deputy General Manager of the Business Department,” Su Rulan answered.

Su Weimin slapped his thigh. “Well, he’s really something, becoming deputy general manager! Had your mother and I known, we wouldn’t have run off—we should’ve gone in for the interview together!”

“Why talk about what could’ve been? If that were the case, we should have let Rulan marry Chen Zhigang back then. He’s so much better than that idiot Ye Tianlin!” Gao Yulan said with conviction.

“Don’t talk nonsense. He’s simply helping out out of old classmate kindness. The past is long gone; he’s probably married himself. Don’t go spreading rumors,” Su Yixue scolded, her face darkening.

Su Weimin pursed his lips and muttered, “Hmph, no matter what, it’s not Ye Tianlin’s merit—it’s thanks to Chen Zhigang’s help!”
