Chapter 65: The Male Version of a Green Tea
The next morning.
Su Rulan’s family set out early by car. When they arrived at the Yunhai Chamber of Commerce, Chen Zhigang was already waiting at the entrance.
As soon as they met, Su Weimin greeted him with great enthusiasm, his face beaming as he grasped Chen Zhigang’s hand and said gratefully, “Zhigang, we really owe you this time. Thank you so much.”
“Zhigang, you really are successful now—already a deputy general manager!” Gao Yulan couldn’t help but praise him repeatedly, her eyes practically brimming with delight.
“Uncle, Auntie, after all these years you haven’t changed a bit. Since you came especially today, of course I’ll fulfill my promise and get you all settled in,” Chen Zhigang replied with an easy smile, clearly enjoying the attention and already having made up his mind.
“Zhigang, we’re troubling you. I won’t forget this favor,” Su Rulan said, bowing slightly.
Chen Zhigang waved it off and said straightforwardly, “No need to be so formal with me. Even aside from our school ties, we’ve known each other for years. Looking after you is only right!”
Hearing this, Su Weimin and Gao Yulan smiled even more broadly, their faces blooming with joy.
Soon, they entered the Chamber’s main doors and went straight to the personnel office upstairs. Chen Zhigang personally arranged the paperwork for them, and in no time at all, the three were officially hired. He then led them to the business department’s workspace, assigned them each a position, and the entire process took less than half an hour.
Seated at his brand-new desk, Su Weimin caressed the computer and couldn’t hide his delight. He immediately gave Chen Zhigang a thumbs-up. “Zhigang, you really are the deputy general manager—everything’s been arranged perfectly!”
“My, Zhigang is so good to us. I can even enjoy the view from my desk,” Gao Yulan chimed in from the adjacent seat, gazing contentedly out the window.
Chen Zhigang smiled, “Uncle, Auntie, don’t worry too much—just do your basic work. If anything comes up, I’ll take care of it right away. And if there’s a chance, I’ll get you both moved into an office; it’s no big deal.”
“That’d be wonderful! Zhigang, we’ll follow your lead—we promise not to cause you any trouble,” Su Weimin replied, nodding eagerly, his attitude a world apart from how he treated Ye Tianlin.
Gao Yulan raised her eyebrows and looked at Su Rulan in surprise. “So where is Rulan’s desk? Isn’t it the same as ours?”
“Yes, where am I sitting?” Su Rulan finally realized she hadn’t asked.
Chen Zhigang lifted his hand and pointed toward the deputy general manager’s office, then produced her employment form. “The Yunhai Chamber is newly established, so there are lots of vacancies. I happen to need a secretary, so I’d like Rulan to be mine and work in my office.”
“Rulan as the secretary to the deputy general manager?” Su Weimin, seeing the employment form, was overjoyed.
“Haha, Rulan, you should thank Zhigang again! If it weren’t for him, where would you find a job this good?” Gao Yulan was ecstatic—were it not for the people around, she would have been dancing with joy.
Su Rulan frowned slightly, feeling something was amiss. It wasn’t that she couldn’t handle the work, but as a married woman, sharing an office with Chen Zhigang seemed inappropriate.
She bit her lip and said, “Zhigang, perhaps you should give the secretary position to someone else. I’d rather sit outside with my parents.”
“Rulan, do you distrust me?” Chen Zhigang adjusted his collar. “You know what kind of person I am. I only want to take better care of you by making you my secretary.”
Su Weimin hurriedly tugged at Su Rulan’s sleeve, winking at her. “Exactly. Zhigang is a good man—you’re overthinking it and would be rejecting his kindness.”
“We shouldn’t let outsiders benefit from this. If someone else snatches the secretary job, won’t we lose out? And being by Zhigang’s side means more opportunities for you!” Gao Yulan urged.
At that moment, Chen Zhigang lowered his voice and spoke earnestly. “One more thing—I forgot to mention. The position of general manager for the business department hasn’t been filled yet. For now, I call the shots. Of course, there’s also another possibility.”
“What possibility?” Su Weimin asked, curious.
Chen Zhigang glanced at Su Rulan several times before replying, “If no one is appointed general manager within a week, I’ll likely take the position myself. And then Rulan would be promoted along with me from secretary to the deputy general manager. It’s an opportunity handed to us!”
“Rulan, did you hear that? You can’t let someone else seize this chance. Zhigang has thought of everything for you. If you refuse, you’ll embarrass him!” Gao Yulan said anxiously.
Su Rulan hesitated, unable to give a reply.
Seeing her indecision, Chen Zhigang changed his tone. “Rulan, even if you won’t do it for yourself, think of the child you’re carrying. And your husband’s illness—everything costs money. How can you manage without a good job?”
But just as he finished speaking, before Su Rulan could respond, someone from personnel arrived with a new announcement.
Only then did they learn that the Chamber’s higher-ups had just made a decision about the business department’s general manager.
Chen Zhigang’s expression grew serious, and he had to pause the conversation. In front of Su Rulan’s family, he asked, “Who is it? Have the Chamber’s leaders decided to let me take the position?”
