Yan Yuanqing couldn’t help but feel both amused and exasperated as he watched Ji Chunyan—the same woman who, not long ago, had acted with utter arrogance before him and demanded that Shi Yurou divorce him. Now, she stood anxiously beneath the camera at the door, her entire demeanor uneasy, her hands and feet awkwardly seeking somewhere to rest. She paced back and forth, occasionally peering through the peephole in the door, as if by staring through it she might see whether someone was coming to let her in.

The doorbell rang once more.

Shi Yurou gave Yan Yuanqing a playful punch. “Stop tormenting my mother and open the door already.”

Yan Yuanqing chuckled, unlocking the door remotely.

Through the camera, he could clearly see Ji Chunyan startle at the click of the unlocking mechanism. Moments later, Yan Yuanqing watched as Shi Yurou led her mother—who seemed more frightened than before—into the living room.

But as soon as Ji Chunyan caught sight of Yan Yuanqing emerging from the room, her earlier unease vanished in an instant, replaced by her usual sharpness. “Why is this jinx still here? Why haven’t you kicked him out yet? Are you really not going to listen to a word I say?”

Ji Chunyan’s words to Shi Yurou were biting.

“This apartment was actually given to us by Master Fan—thanks to Yuanqing!” Shi Yurou retorted.

Her words left Ji Chunyan speechless. She stood rooted to the spot, at a loss for what to do. “What? Master Fan? You mean that Master Fan?”

Shi Yurou nodded lightly. “Yes, apart from him, is there another Master Fan in this city?”

Ji Chunyan seemed struck by a tremendous blow, standing frozen and dazed, her eyes unfocused.

Yan Yuanqing said nothing more, nor did he seize the opportunity to ridicule his mother-in-law. Instead, he simply turned and went back to his room.

Finally, he was in a new environment, no longer having to worry about the Shi family’s petty schemes. Yan Yuanqing felt his mood brighten considerably in this new neighborhood. It seemed that adversity had led to unexpected fortune; though he’d been cast out by his own family’s scheming, he had ended up living in a far better place. As for the fact that the apartment belonged to someone else, that was no concern. Yan Yuanqing had long since confirmed that Fan Yongfeng was a man who never forgot a kindness.

The next afternoon, an unexpected visitor arrived at Yan Yuanqing’s home.

“Master Yan, how are you settling in? Is there anything you’re not used to, or anything uncomfortable? Just let me know and I’ll have someone take care of it right away!”

It was Fan Yongfeng himself.

He had come to visit Yan Yuanqing in person, and had done so with admirable discretion, attracting no attention. In fact, very few people knew about this visit.

Yan Yuanqing smiled gently, his tone full of gratitude. “Thank you for everything. Without your help, we wouldn’t have moved into such a wonderful place so quickly. Who knows, we might still be sleeping on the streets right now!”

Fan Yongfeng laughed heartily. “Master Yan, you jest! Someone of your talent would never be short of money. But if you ever do run short, just say the word. The Fan family doesn’t have much to offer, but money is one thing we have plenty of.”

“So from now on, whatever you need, whatever you want, just come to me. Master Yan, you saved my youngest daughter’s life—you are our family’s benefactor. I could never do enough to repay you!”

Yan Yuanqing looked thoughtfully at Fan Yongfeng before him. It was no wonder this man had reached such heights. Along the way, he must have made countless connections, drawing on the strength of others in critical moments to reach his position today. This, truly, was a man of far-reaching vision and grand ambition.
