Chapter Fifty-Six: A Windfall from Heaven
Given the current status of Yan Yuanqing and Shi Yurou in this family, it was practically impossible for any family member to take the initiative to visit them. Yan Yuanqing was well aware of this fact—no one would come to his home, for doing so would likely invite ridicule from other members of the clan, or worse, turn him into a laughingstock.
So then, who could the visitors outside be?
Yan Yuanqing couldn't quite figure it out. He glanced at Shi Yurou, who shook her head, indicating she was just as clueless.
That made things all the more intriguing.
Ji Chunyan had temporarily called a truce—at the very least, the family's dirty laundry could not be aired so recklessly.
At last, the visitors knocked at the door.
"Please come in!" Ji Chunyan's voice betrayed a hint of anxiety. What had just happened to Yan Yuanqing worried her greatly; if the family were to mete out punishment, would she and her daughter be implicated as well?
If that happened, it would truly be disaster without cause.
Finally, their guests entered the living room, and Yan Yuanqing saw their faces.
And at a glance at their uniforms, he was immediately taken aback.
For judging by their attire, these people were not sent by the head of the family, but by Shi Chengren! The very same Shi Chengren who, not long ago, had tried to depose Shi Tianhe and seize the position of family head for himself!
Yan Yuanqing had assumed that after suffering such a setback, Shi Chengren would at least lay low for a while, or at the very least, harbor a grudge against him. Why would he send his men here now?
"Master Yan, Miss Shi!"
The visitors were impeccably polite, which pleased Yan Yuanqing. It seemed they had not come to cause trouble.
"What brings you here?" Yan Yuanqing asked coolly.
"We are here by order of the master, to see if there is anything you need and to offer our assistance," one of them replied. "We have just heard about the incident at the family’s clinic. Master Yan, it won't be long before you face the clan’s punishment and scrutiny."
"Therefore, with our help, you’ll be able to maintain your normal life. Otherwise, you may soon find yourselves beset by endless troubles, leaving you utterly exhausted, unable to focus on anything else!"
These words left both Yan Yuanqing and Shi Yurou stunned. Ji Chunyan, on the other hand, puffed out her chest like a proud duck and strode up to the three men.
"Hmph! Shi Chengren’s men? At least you have some conscience. This house is far too small for the three of us. Go back and tell him to find us a larger house within the family compound—a much better one!"
"And make sure all the renovations and furnishings are brand new. Only then will he show any true sincerity!"
The two men exchanged bewildered glances as they listened to Ji Chunyan’s demands. While she spoke, they remained silent, appearing to listen with utmost seriousness.
But when Ji Chunyan finished her performance and awaited their agreement, their response was nothing like what she had expected.
"Madam, our master’s instructions did not include obeying your orders. We’re sorry, but we cannot and will not fulfill your requests."
"We can only accept requests from Yan Yuanqing and Shi Yurou," one of the men stated solemnly. Though he refused, his words and manner were impeccable, leaving no room for reproach.
Ji Chunyan could never have imagined such an outcome. She was, after all, the mother of one and mother-in-law of the other! How was it that she now had no standing to make decisions on their behalf?
