Chapter 99: Oh, Wise One! Please Save Our Poor Daughter
After a sigh of regret, Elder Gao continued with deep sorrow, “Master, you have no idea—on the very night of my daughter Cuilan’s wedding, my son-in-law, after drinking too much, suddenly transformed into a monster…”
“A monster? Suddenly transformed? What on earth happened?” Xuanzang was clearly startled.
Mrs. Gao took over, wiping her tears. “It was supposed to be a joyous occasion, but because my son-in-law drank greedily, he immediately became a pig demon. First pig ears, then a pig’s snout, and before we knew it… he truly was a pig demon!”
At this point, one might think the matter was settled.
But it was far from over.
Mrs. Gao, tears streaming, went on, “Master, you don’t understand the torment my husband and I have endured. Ever since my future son-in-law turned into that pig demon six months ago, he has caused endless suffering to our poor daughter Cuilan. It has been half a year—we parents haven’t even seen her. Master, please, we beg you, save our poor daughter.”
Suddenly, with a loud thud, overcome with emotion, the woman knelt before Xuanzang, tugging at her husband’s sleeve. “Come, you kneel too. Let us beseech this venerable monk to save our daughter. She is truly pitiful…”
“No… no, that cannot be. Please, stand up at once.”
Seeing two elderly souls kneel before him was shocking; such acts were believed to shorten one’s lifespan.
Xuanzang was both confused and anxious, swiftly helping them to their feet and offering comfort. “To be honest, the reason I came to your Gao Old Village is because of a companion I hired.”
“Master, what do you mean? We don’t quite understand…” The couple exchanged puzzled glances.
Xuanzang explained further. “Here’s the story: the companion I employed is named Sun Wukong. He is very powerful, and he told me himself that your village is troubled by demons. So I came here first to see what was happening.”
Upon hearing this, Elder Gao and his wife brightened with hope.
Mrs. Gao asked eagerly, “Master, where is this companion you mentioned?”
“Yes, where is this great man now? We must bring him here at once and capture that pig demon,” Elder Gao said fiercely.
That cursed pig demon had tormented them for over six months. Though under the same roof, they hadn’t seen their daughter, who was trapped in another room, imprisoned by the demon.
That pig demon deserved to be killed!
The couple, anxious and desperate, tugged at Xuanzang again. He had no choice but to share their urgency while trying to calm them. “Do not worry. My companion is right outside the village, under the banyan tree…”
“Then let us hurry and bring this great man here.”
“Let’s go!”
With a shout, they disturbed the neighbors with their commotion.
---
Under the banyan tree outside the village, Sun Wukong was leaping from branch to branch, reveling in the freedom of his monkey nature.
The monk should be arriving soon.
Sure enough, Xuanzang appeared, hastily followed by the Gao couple.
“Amitabha! Sun, my friend, I have come as promised, bringing the people,” Xuanzang greeted.
“Is this the great man you spoke of?” The elderly couple stared in shock.
Covered entirely in fur, how could this be anything but a monkey?
The old man and woman were startled, still trembling from the terror inflicted by that damned pig demon.
And now, this “great man”… didn’t look the part at all.
“Master… are you sure this is the one? But he’s just a monkey—surely this is some kind of joke?” The couple was utterly bewildered.
Seeing the misunderstanding, Xuanzang quickly reassured them. “Listen carefully, my friends. This companion of mine is no ordinary being. His skills are immense. As the saying goes, you cannot measure the sea with a bucket, nor judge a person by their appearance. Sun, please say a few words.”
Sun Wukong jumped down from the branches, clearly offended by the couple’s dismissive gaze. Suddenly, he snapped, “Hmph! Old folks, do you doubt my ability to catch demons? Hmph! I don’t have time to waste on nonsense—take me to see that pig demon. Where is the brat now?”
If not for his master foreseeing and informing him that this pig demon was destined to become a disciple of Xuanzang, Sun Wukong would have been far less patient.
The monkey’s fiery temperament and fierce demeanor were unmistakable.
The Gao couple dared not oppose him and obediently led the way.
They entered the manor and arrived before the door where their daughter was imprisoned.
Elder Gao trembled as he spoke, “Great man, my daughter has been trapped here by that pig demon’s spell for over six months. We haven’t seen her, nor know her condition…”
“Fear not. With me here, even the Jade Emperor himself wouldn’t dare act rashly. Watch and see,” Sun Wukong declared confidently.
---
A spell? Cast by a pig demon?
Feeling restless on the journey, Sun Wukong thought to have some fun by thrashing the pig demon.
With that in mind, he boldly strode inside under everyone’s watchful eyes.
“What… what is going on? Has the spell failed? That can’t be…” the Gao couple gasped as they watched Sun Wukong walk freely inside.
When they tried to follow, a dark force violently pushed them back.
Thud! Both fell to the ground, wincing in pain from the repulsion.
They had endured the torment of that demon’s spell for half a year.
“Ha ha… old folks, what’s wrong with you?” Sun Wukong laughed heartily at their comical fall.
“Please rise, both of you. Sun, don’t just stand there amused—think of how to solve this problem,” Xuanzang urged.
“Bah! Monk, no one asked you to save anyone. If you’ve got nothing better to do, stop nagging,” Sun Wukong scoffed.
He emerged from inside unhindered, proving the demon’s spell had no effect on him.
The Gao couple was overjoyed. Exchanging glances, they immediately knelt before Sun Wukong.
Then, with one voice, they cried out, “Great man! Please, save our poor daughter!”
