Upon entering the house, Sun Wukong found Chu Xiaoyu leisurely sipping tea, a picture of serene contentment.

Wait… wasn’t it said that the Immortal Lord was taking a midday nap? How could he be…?

Sun Wukong's expression flickered, and he hurriedly bowed. “Immortal Lord.”

“Mm, sit,” Chu Xiaoyu replied.

Sun Wukong took a seat, comporting himself with utmost propriety.

Chu Xiaoyu casually poured him a cup of tea and asked offhandedly, “Well? Did you encounter that monk from the Tang Dynasty?”

Sun Wukong nodded, his face lighting up with delight. “I did, but the monk has run into some trouble. So, your disciple has come to seek your assistance.”

A monkey never visits the temple for no reason.

Chu Xiaoyu had anticipated the true purpose behind Sun Wukong’s visit.

The monkey had come for the white dragon horse in the backyard!

Seeing Chu Xiaoyu maintain an indifferent demeanor, Sun Wukong scratched his head and finally ventured, carefully, “Immortal Lord, your disciple wishes to ask a favor. May I borrow the white dragon horse in your backyard?”

Ever since he secretly spirited the white dragon horse away from the Heavenly Palace and gifted it to Chu Xiaoyu, Sun Wukong knew the Immortal Lord cherished the creature dearly.

Now, to ask for that precious steed—would the Immortal Lord agree?

Sun Wukong was far from certain, his heart uneasy.

“Heh, you want my white dragon horse from the backyard? Ah, you monkeys always put me in a difficult position,” Chu Xiaoyu said, raising his cup and taking a sip.

He neither accepted nor refused immediately.

What was the Immortal Lord implying?

Sun Wukong was baffled. “Ahem… Immortal Lord, I know it’s bold to make such a request, but I must. After all, the monk is a mere mortal, and he needs an extraordinary mount. Ordinary horses simply won’t do…”

“I understand your meaning,” Chu Xiaoyu interrupted. “That white dragon horse, left idle in my estate, is a waste of its talents. Better to let it fulfill its purpose and discover a broader world.”

To keep a steed from the Heavenly Palace confined to a humble farm was a tragic waste of its gifts.

Now, given this opportunity, it was only right to liberate its nature.

Chu Xiaoyu agreed readily.

Delight blossomed in Sun Wukong’s eyes; he leapt up excitedly and bowed deeply to Chu Xiaoyu. “Your disciple thanks you, Immortal Lord, and on behalf of the Tang monk as well, for your generosity.”

The Immortal Lord, indeed, was a straightforward soul.

Chu Xiaoyu waved a dismissive hand. If the monkey kept praising him, he might well lose his sense of self.

The matter was settled.

Sun Wukong’s clever monkey eyes darted about, as if scheming something unspeakable.

Chu Xiaoyu, familiar with the monkey’s ways, wondered if he hadn’t already mastered them.

He asked leisurely, “Wukong, is there anything else?”

“Hehe!” Sun Wukong scratched his ears, squeezing out a sly grin. “Immortal Lord, since you can foresee what is yet to come, your disciple would like to ask—could you tell me what monsters and demons lie ahead in our journey, so I might prepare in advance?”

“You mischievous monkey…” Chu Xiaoyu laughed and shook his head.

Nature is nature; once enlightened, these creatures rival the cleverness of humans.

Seeing Chu Xiaoyu smile without answering, Sun Wukong pressed, “Immortal Lord, is it forbidden to reveal the workings of fate?”

Chu Xiaoyu shook his head. “Not at all. I was just considering: if I spoil all eighty-one tribulations the Tang monk will face, it would surely be amusing.”

“Ah… What sort of amusement? Immortal Lord, please don’t keep it to yourself—tell me, quickly!” Sun Wukong was impatient beyond measure.

Chu Xiaoyu pondered for a moment, then said, “Very well. Let me put it this way: on your journey west, you will encounter many monsters and demons. Some are rogue spirits, some are mounts belonging to immortals of the Heavenly Palace… In summary, any monster or demon with connections will ultimately come to a good end.”

“Connected monsters? Then… what about those without backing? What will become of them?” Sun Wukong asked anxiously.

“They will be smashed to death by your golden staff.”

“Uh… Is that so? Wouldn’t that be a bit cruel of me?” Sun Wukong scratched his head, embarrassed.

Chu Xiaoyu saw no issue in offering such candid spoilers.

Organizing his thoughts, he continued, “The Tang monk’s tribulations have begun. Next, you’ll pass by a monastery named Guanyin Temple. The old abbot there will harbor evil thoughts, coveting the monk’s precious robe, and will even set fire to endanger your lives.”

“What? Such villainy? Outrageous! I’ll return immediately and deal with that greedy abbot!” Sun Wukong declared angrily.

Chu Xiaoyu’s expression remained calm. “This is only the beginning of the monk’s tribulations—inevitable. If the Tang monk turns back to the East, nothing will happen.”

“Next, you’ll arrive at a place called Gao Village, where you’ll encounter a pig demon. This pig demon was once a great general in the Heavenly Palace, called Marshal Tianpeng…”

“After you subdue the pig demon, the Tang monk will take him in, as instructed by Guanyin, to become his disciple and escort him to the West.”

“Then, you’ll pass by a place called Yellow Wind Cave, and face a formidable group of monsters… the Yellow Wind Monster…”

“The Yellow Wind Monster is actually a mouse from the foot of Spirit Mountain who became a spirit after stealing the sacred oil from the glazed lamp. With the blessing of the Great Eared Tathagata, even with your seventy-two transformations, you are no match for him.”

“Ah! Such a formidable spirit? Then… how should your disciple deal with him?” Sun Wukong was suddenly anxious.

Chu Xiaoyu flicked his finger at him, scoffing, “You silly monkey! Have you forgotten the Universe Bag I gave you? That bag can swallow all things under heaven—even the Five Finger Mountain of the Great Eared Tathagata is no obstacle. A mere mouse spirit is insignificant.”

“Of course, if you don’t wish to use the Universe Bag, and disdain such spoils, you may seek help from Lingji Bodhisattva—he will have a way to deal with the spirit.”

Sun Wukong nodded repeatedly.

Those who spoil the plot are always the most troublesome!

All the monsters and spirits of the Journey to the West would dearly love to see Chu Xiaoyu ground to dust.

Chu Xiaoyu: Come, try and strike me!
