Chapter 138: The Energy-Concentrating Defense Tower

Amaterasu dispatched the three troublemakers in no time, and the crisis before me was resolved.
“Amaterasu, let’s go,” I said to her. [The latest updates can be found at—]
She answered with a single word, but just after she had finished beating them down, laughter came from behind me. I turned around and heard someone say, “Hahaha! Sensual, magnificent, sturdy—what a beautiful tower!”
I saw a player carrying a katana circling our defensive tower while speaking, occasionally tapping the tower with his weapon. I said, “Brother, are you…”
Before I could finish, the man began hacking wildly at the defensive tower. In the blink of an eye, it was reduced to rubble. I stared in shock. Who the hell was this guy? How dare he steal our tower—he was practically begging to die!
“Damn it!”
I roared and was about to bring my staff down on him, but the man suddenly turned his back to me and said with complete seriousness, “Please… esteemed Sir Mighty Dragon, my name is Goodblade. We stand on the same side. We are both striving to help our class win and earn the end-of-term scholarship.”
“Damn it! Then you attacked the wrong tower, didn’t you?” I said, on the verge of tears.
Goodblade replied sincerely, “It’s just a little hobby of mine. I couldn’t help myself.”
“For crying out loud, we’ve lost this as badly as a rag being wrung dry,” I said helplessly.
Goodblade continued, “I am terribly sorry. It is entirely because of my unfortunate hobby, but I simply cannot change! I hope you can forgive me, Sir Mighty Dragon. Please remember that no matter how many mistakes I make, I will do everything in my power to make amends. Victory does not depend on towers, Sir Mighty Dragon—it depends on conviction! My sword is your sword!”
Good heavens. The enemy had three inseparable buddies, while I had the Infinite Cheapblade Saint on my side. I really wanted to know who else was out there.
But the moment he finished speaking, Goodblade suddenly cried, “Ow!” Something struck him and sent him flying. I had no idea where he landed.
I turned around and saw two people who had attacked him: an archer and a mage, a level-forty Sniper and a level-forty-one Archmage.
“What are you two supposed to be?” I asked.
The Sniper replied, “The two of us aren’t things…”
“Ah!”
“You’ve been worked up to the point of confusion. My name is Fallen, and his is Cloud-Piercing Arrow,” the Archmage player explained.
The instant he finished speaking, Amaterasu charged forward and killed Cloud-Piercing Arrow with a single slash. Then the Sonic Werewolf appeared without a sound, and the two of them and the beast surrounded Fallen.
The Sonic Werewolf swung a fist. Fallen shifted sideways and dodged the attack, then threw a dagger that struck me. With a faint sound, a damage figure of –300 floated above my head.
A look of astonishment flashed across Fallen’s face. Clearly, he had not expected my defense to be so high. Three hundred health was not even a tenth of my total.
After the system upgrade, the health bars that used to appear above players’ heads during battle had been removed. He had no idea how much health I possessed—but if he had known, he probably would have cried.
Still, from my perspective, it was impressive that a mage with barely any physical attack power had managed to shave off three hundred points of health. I had more than a thousand defense.
That said, his class was troublesome. The Archmage was one of the three second-tier mage classes, possessing powerful single-target damage skills and all sorts of bizarre magic.
“Furious lightning, release your wrath! Thunderbolt Blast!”
A bolt of lightning as thick as a bowl descended from the heavens and struck me directly, dealing –2,400 damage.
It gave me quite a fright.
Damn it, an Archmage’s single-target damage really was no joke!

Amaterasu immediately swung her blade at him. But after silently reciting another incantation, his figure vanished from its original position, and Amaterasu’s attack struck nothing but air.
This must have been the so-called Invisibility spell.
I immediately activated Fiery Eyes. Before those eyes, no demon or monster could remain hidden. I nervously scanned the surroundings, but I could not find anything unusual.
Had he escaped?
Suddenly, another cry of alarm came from behind me. A section of Amaterasu’s health had vanished. Furious, she unleashed Sever the Roots, but still failed to hit him.
In terms of attack power, very few people could survive even one of Amaterasu’s strikes. Unfortunately, her defense and health were comparatively poor. Her attack was terrifying, but if she could not hit her opponent, it was completely meaningless.
I continued using Fiery Eyes to inspect the area, but I could not find the man. Even so, I had a way to force him out.
“Sonic Werewolf, Roaring Cannon!”
Upon receiving my command, the Sonic Werewolf immediately released a piercing roar. Fallen’s figure appeared at once, and he was stunned on the spot.
A moment later, one strike from my staff and one slash from Amaterasu sent him out of the arena.
After dealing with the attackers, we continued onward. We did not encounter any other players from Class Seven along the way, but we did run into a monster.
It was a Fangbeast, level fifty, an elite monster. Its description read: “An omnivorous monster that lives on the grasslands.”
Why was there a grassland monster here? It was probably a wild monster. I wondered what it would drop.
After beating the Fangbeast senseless, we earned a few hundred experience points and one gold coin. Just then, I saw a red eagle flying toward us and immediately shouted, “Dragonjoy, where are you going?”
The great red eagle descended, and Dragonjoy and Little Ai climbed down from its back.
“Back to replenish our health,” Dragonjoy said.
“Replenish your health?”
“Brother, you didn’t know?” Dragonjoy asked.
“I didn’t.” I shook my head.
“Come back with us and you’ll see,” Little Ai said.
We soon returned to the open area where we had started. Once inside, I saw that my health was slowly recovering. There were also quite a few people there.
Dragonjoy explained, “During the match, if you’re reduced to critical health but manage to escape, you can return here to recover. Your stamina is restored here as well.”
“There’s something like that?” I asked. “How is your side progressing?”
“Not very well. We’ve already pushed all the way to the enemy’s doorstep, but those five defensive towers are absurdly powerful. Two shots are enough to kill a person, and they attack extremely quickly. On top of that, they automatically recover when damaged. They’re completely ridiculous.”
Little Ai said, “Dragon Spirit, come with us later. Have your dragon act as a meat shield. Then we can easily take care of those defensive towers.”
“What if Dragon Battle can’t withstand them?” I asked.
“Then you go,” Little Ai replied. “Your defense and health are even more absurd than a warrior’s.”
“You’re ruthless!”
After our health and stamina had recovered to one hundred percent, we set out together. Before long, we arrived in front of the five defensive towers.
There were no players from Class Seven there, but several of our classmates were hiding outside the towers’ range and resting.
“Damn it! I never expected these defensive towers to be even more outrageous than the previous ones. What kind of map did that idiot choose?”
Windmoon frowned. “What should we do?”
A player wearing gray, iron-like armor and holding a strange black war hammer in his right hand stepped forward and said in a deep voice, “To hell with it. A few of us will charge out and see whether they’re tougher or we are.”
Windmoon nodded. “That’s our only option. Everyone else, stay still. A few of us warriors will charge out first and assess the situation before deciding what to do. If things look bad, we’ll retreat immediately.”
At that moment, the warriors from our class prepared to charge. I used Fiery Eyes to scan the defensive towers, hoping to discover something useful.
The towers stood about ten meters tall and were built entirely from stone. At the top of each was something resembling a cannon barrel, swiveling from side to side as though searching for targets.
Clearly, the moment everyone charged out, they would be met by a full volley. In the blink of an eye, a large number of people could be killed.
Energy-Gathering Defensive Tower, level 60. Cannon-type structure. Damage: 1,500 points. Attack speed: 3 attacks per second. Durability: 5,000 points.
Skill 1, Enhanced Splash: When this unit attacks, it deals one hundred percent damage to all units surrounding the target.
Skill 2, Magical Vision: This unit can see invisible units.
Skill 3, Enhanced Barrier: Damage received by this unit is reduced by fifty percent.
Skill 4, Regeneration: This unit automatically restores its durability.
Damn, these defensive towers really were monstrous. They had one-hundred-percent splash damage, could recover their health, and took only half damage. They were practically lethal.
“That thing is called an Energy-Gathering Defensive Tower. It deals 1,500 damage and has splash damage. If we all charge out together, we’ll be blasted into oblivion,” I said calmly.
“I’ll go out first and test it. I have a thousand defense and more than five thousand health. I’ll lead the way. Everyone follow me!”
With that, Iron Fist raised his shield and charged out first.
After hesitating for a moment, several other warrior-class students followed him. Dragonjoy, Little Ai, and I moved forward a few steps, but after scanning the enemy’s capabilities, we naturally had no desire to rush out and take unnecessary risks. We could only wait and see what happened.
Iron Fist was the fastest. The moment he charged out, every cannon barrel turned toward him.
In the blink of an eye, countless milky-white energy shells, each the size of a fist, came screaming through the air.
Iron Fist was there in person and could not help but panic. He raised his shield to block them, but the shells battered him backward. Then one projectile shattered his shield, and four more reduced him to critical health.
Iron Fist turned around, activated Charge, and escaped beyond the towers’ range. The cannons stopped firing, becoming silent as though nothing had happened.
“What a monstrous thing! They attack so quickly, and five defensive towers are blocking our path. What are we supposed to do? Are we going to stay trapped here forever?”
Iron Fist cursed angrily before running back to our starting point to recover his health.
The rest of us also began racking our brains over how to deal with the towers.
