Chapter 94: What Did the Blue Light Starship Do

After arranging for Leah and the others to steer the life pods toward the Boss’s position, everyone ended the call and stood in silence before the monitors.

What they faced now was even worse than before. Earlier, the world had merely been overrun with zombies. So long as they were careful not to draw a horde, there was still a chance of survival with the weapons in their hands.

But now, in addition to the zombies, there were thousands upon thousands of bizarre starships, that dreadful blue radiance, and the terrifying fate of being drawn into it and transformed into an energy crystal.

What were they supposed to do from here on out? The same question rose in everyone’s mind at once, yet no one could offer an answer.

Their own small starship had been shot down, leaving them unable to make an interstellar jump. That meant they could not leave this planet. Faced with so many horrifying blue-light starships and so many zombies, how to survive had become the greatest problem before them.

If they forced themselves to find a silver lining, then one thing could at least be used: where the blue-light starships were present, the zombies had no fighting power at all. But how to avoid the effect of the blue light and keep themselves from getting dragged into it was still a complete mystery.

“Those blue-light starships... see if we can seize one,” the Boss said after a long silence. If they wanted to escape this nightmare, the first thing they had to do was leave the planet. And the easiest way to leave was by starship. The most direct method of all would be to get hold of a blue-light ship.

It was easy enough to say, but terribly hard to do. They had no method at all right now. Still, difficult or not, it was at least a path forward.

“Mm. Let’s first figure out what exactly that blue light emitted by the starships is,” Du Yun said with a nod. At this point, that was all they could do. It was risky, yes, but staying alive mattered more than anything.

Once again, everyone turned their attention to the monitor. Beneath the starship, within the blue glow, countless zombies were slowly rising upward, and all of them could feel a chill deep in their bones.

Leah had just told them that after those zombies rose high into the sky, they vanished all at once for reasons unknown, leaving only a handful of glowing red crystals behind.

Du Yun and the others did not know what was happening in the unseen heights beyond their line of sight, but the process of those zombies disappearing could not possibly have been pleasant. And the red crystals were extremely familiar to them: energy crystals.

What kind of person could pilot a starship into a place packed with human-shaped zombies, gather them up by the tens of thousands like reaping grain, and then turn them into energy crystals? Only ten days ago, those zombies had been living, breathing people.

Just thinking of that made Du Yun’s expression darken. She looked up at the blue-light starships in the sky and felt cold all the way to her core.

Only then did Du Yun belatedly realize that when she saw the blue light this time, she did not seem to be drawn toward it at all. The Boss and the others did not seem to be, either.

“Are you still being attracted by the blue light?” Du Yun asked.

“No,” the Boss replied. At first everyone was stunned by the question, then they suddenly understood. They had been staring at the blue-light starships for quite some time now, yet none of them had been drawn toward them the way they had been the first time. Did that mean they would not be affected anymore in the future?

The discovery sent them into wild delight. If they were no longer drawn to the blue light, then the area around those starships would no longer be an untouchable zone of terror. Perhaps taking one really was possible.

“Smartie, what’s going on?” Du Yun asked quietly, her excitement still intact.

“Just now, a scan showed that some toxins in your bodies have been expelled,” Smartie said after a brief pause, and when it spoke again, it gave Du Yun a huge surprise.

“A scan? Toxins?” Du Yun was a little baffled. Instinct told her this was a good thing, but she still could not quite make out what had happened.

“I can scan everything within a hundred meters,” Smartie said proudly, sounding bright and pleased with itself. “Of course I can scan your bodies too.”

“Have you been scanning randomly all this time?” Du Yun did not feel relieved at all. Instead, she widened her eyes and unconsciously wrapped her arms across her chest. If it could scan anything at will, then didn’t that mean she was practically naked before Smartie? That was far too outrageous.

“No.” Though Smartie did not understand why its master’s emotions were so unstable, it answered honestly. “I only scanned the toxins just now. I never scanned before that. If you need it, I can scan you at any time.”

“No, no, who said I wanted that?” Du Yun hurriedly denied it, suddenly feeling as though the whole world had gone wrong. She warned Smartie sternly, “You are not allowed to scan me randomly in the future.”

“And you are not allowed to scan anyone else either. Focus on monitoring the zombies and the blue-light starships,” she added seriously, still uneasy, and shrank back slightly.

“Are you cold?” the Boss asked when he saw her hugging herself and curling in on herself.

“No. I just think it’s a little frightening,” Du Yun said after exhaling, barely managing to steady herself.

“Yes,” the Boss agreed. Even for him, a veteran who had seen countless battles, what they were facing now was difficult to accept, let alone Du Yun, a young girl.

The road ahead was impossible to predict. The only certainty was that if they wanted to survive, they would have to fight. Fight the zombies, fight the blue-light starships, and fight the elusive hand lurking behind it all, until they carved out a path to survival and returned to the world as it should be.

“If you’re tired, go back and rest for a while,” the Boss said to Du Yun. They no longer needed to race against time to catch up with the starships, so there was no need to be as urgent as before. Since they still had no idea what to do about the future, it would be better to use this time to get some proper rest.

“Okay.” Du Yun happened to want to ask Smartie about the toxins it had mentioned, so she nodded and headed toward the main hall. Her head felt hazy and heavy, and she was utterly exhausted. After she finished asking, she would sleep first and think later.

When Du Yun woke up, several more hours had already passed. Rubbing her flat, starving stomach, she rummaged through her storage compartment, took out a loaf of bread and ate it, then drank a gourdful of water before she finally felt somewhat better.

The time of leaving this zombie world remained impossible to predict, so food and the like had to be rationed carefully.

Suddenly, noisy voices came from outside, and she could even faintly hear the laughter of Dazhuang and the Skinny Monkey. Du Yun’s heart stirred. Thinking of the Boss’s men from the Sea Anchor, could it be that they had arrived?
