Chapter 107: The Hidden Terrifying Truth
The blue light was peculiar, but no one knew exactly what it was.
“Shall we give it a try?” Du Yun felt as if a huge secret was pressing down on her heart, making it hard to breathe.
“How do we try?” Not only were the leader and the others interested, but even Brother Niu and the hungry officer-zombie Ji Yun were drawn in.
“Just now, a starship with blue light passed by. Let’s follow it and see what’s really going on,” Du Yun said after some thought. It was the quickest way.
“Alright.” The leader nodded and instructed the team to steer the energy-powered vehicle in pursuit of the blue light starship. But the starship was moving too fast—far beyond the vehicle’s capability to catch up. They lost precious time and managed only a few kilometers before the starship vanished in the blink of an eye.
“Ah, the starship flew away!” Taozi looked toward where it disappeared, clearly disappointed. She was very fond of Brother Niu, so naturally, she had been eager to see what interested him. But now, with the starship gone, hope faded.
Du Yun sighed, realizing it was futile, and prepared to return to her own starship.
At that moment, a faint blue light suddenly flickered ahead, startling Du Yun so much that her whole body shivered involuntarily.
“Ah! Blue light!” Taozi shouted excitedly, tugging at Brother Niu’s hand. “Brother Niu, look! Is it that one? Is it that one?”
But everyone’s attention wasn’t on Taozi anymore. Two advanced zombies appeared to enter the same state as before, drawn irresistibly to the blue light, their intelligence and memories slowly returning.
Du Yun and the leader carefully observed the advanced zombies’ movements, wary of any danger. The team and survivors had to focus all their efforts to resist the blue light’s influence.
“That blue light—it really is something wrong with it,” even someone as mentally strong as Du Yun’s heart raced upon seeing it again. It had to be truly problematic.
“Only by trying will we know,” the leader said thoughtfully, watching as the energy-absorbing vehicle attracted several zombies with the blue light, then slightly shifted form to trap them inside its compartment while continuing to lure more.
“Take control of that little vehicle,” Du Yun said after glancing at the energy vehicle and then the leader, quickly understanding his intention. Her eyes gleamed as she eagerly set to work.
With Dou Zhi’s assistance, controlling the energy vehicle went smoothly. They didn’t alert the trapped zombies, and soon the team returned to the starship with the newly controlled vehicle.
“Let’s begin!” The leader placed the controlled vehicle in an empty warehouse. Alongside Du Yun, the core team members, and the two advanced zombies stood ready to experiment with the blue light’s effects.
Everyone was armed and alert, prepared for any unforeseen incidents. Only a few were present, deliberately limiting exposure to prevent excessive harm from the blue light, whose effects were still under investigation.
Du Yun nodded and manipulated the vehicle’s mechanical arm to drag a zombie out from inside. It was a middle-aged man, filthy but robust.
Once pulled out, the middle-aged zombie seemed to switch on, suddenly agitated, baring his teeth and clawing as he lunged toward Du Yun.
Ji Yun frowned and, before anyone could react, kicked the zombie down hard. His boot pressed firmly, and the zombie’s struggles ceased instantly, blood splattering across the floor. The vivid red made Du Yun frown involuntarily.
“Hmph!” Ji Yun strode back as if nothing had happened, casting a cool glance at Du Yun to signal her to continue.
Du Yun didn’t know what to say, resignedly nodding. She released another zombie—a woman around thirty, looking worse off. She was missing part of her forearm, her long hair matted and clinging to her face, appearing pitiful.
Perhaps sensing the presence of the two advanced zombies, this female zombie, once freed, didn’t attack or move, just trembling in place.
“Prepare the blue light,” Du Yun said, activating the vehicle’s blue light device.
Almost instantly, the female zombie’s attention was wholly captured by the glow. Her body relaxed, visibly improving from before.
“Ho ho ho,” the zombie began making hoarse sounds from her throat. After a moment, she slowly started swaying, mimicking the most relaxed state zombies ever enter—conserving energy by gently rocking.
She swayed left and right, then suddenly noticed Du Yun and the others, as if startled. She retreated quickly, ending up cornered near the energy vehicle, crouching and trembling as she stared anxiously at them.
“Who... who are you?” Her voice trembled uncontrollably, clearly terrified. Seeing the corpses and the vast pool of blood on the floor, she shook so violently it seemed she might fall apart.
We’re the ones more frightened! Du Yun raged silently. “You look like a zombie yourself, with no arm even. Why act like a virtuous woman about to be assaulted?”
“This blue light can really restore zombies’ minds!” Du Yun couldn’t help but marvel after her sarcastic thought. Before, only vague hints had come from the two advanced zombies’ words, but now it was undeniable—the blue light could bring back zombie rationality.
But why restore zombies’ minds? Why only transform them into energy crystals after restoring their sanity through extreme heat and pressure? Du Yun’s mind raced. Looking at the female zombie before her and recalling the energy crystals she had seen—filled with a cruel, violent aura—a dark suspicion arose.
The blue light could awaken the human emotions buried within zombies, and then, in a state of extreme terror, they were compressed into energy crystals by heat and pressure. Was this some kind of dark sorcery described in legends?
Unwittingly, Du Yun had uncovered the grim truth.
