Chapter Sixty-Three: The Black Knight’s Counterattack

In the remote suburbs of K City, at the Xu family mansion, all electronic surveillance devices had been completely shut off. Chen Xiao knew that such electronics were mere decorations for those with supernatural abilities—especially someone like Qiu Yun, whose powers could destroy metal. Worse yet, these devices could even become ticking bombs for themselves. At his insistence, the Xu family had temporarily brought in twenty trained hounds; under the current circumstances, Chen Xiao trusted the dogs’ noses far more than any electronic instrument.

All fifty of the Xu family’s bodyguards had been outfitted with new gear: pure cotton tracksuits, with any metal equipment—electric batons, pistols, and the like—surrendered. Their latest issued weapon was a wooden baseball bat. Looking at fifty identically dressed men clutching bats, one could have mistaken them for a professional baseball team rather than a security detail.

Chen Xiao’s arrangement was hardly ideal, but it was necessary. Though Old Tian and the other two had officially intervened, their prior client was Lu Bancheng—Old Tian had made it clear: business is business, and personal matters remain separate. Even if Young Xu was Chen Xiao’s close friend, they wouldn’t spare extra resources to protect the Xu family. Zhu Rong and Gong Gong, the married couple, were mainly guarding Lu Bancheng. As for the Xu family, aside from Chen Xiao’s voluntary help, Old Tian only promised to rush over if crisis struck—if circumstances allowed.

To those old monsters, principles are principles; business is business.

So far, no one knew who the Black Knight’s main target was—Lu Bancheng, the Xu family, or the senior executives of the European consortium. With limited manpower, the trio from Rotten Alley placed business first, focusing their efforts on protecting their client.

This was understandable, and Chen Xiao could not object.

The Xu family was on high alert, though Old Xu himself was absent. The shrewd patriarch was nowhere to be found—not even Young Xu knew his whereabouts. This incident was big; as a powerful figure, the old man was clearly under official protection. He hadn’t brought his son along, instead leaving him at home, for a reason: he believed the primary target was himself. Thus, he kept his son away to avoid greater danger should things go awry. Moreover, Old Xu seemed to have some knowledge of the supernatural world—after all, he had referred Lu Bancheng to Rotten Alley. Sensing that this incident wouldn’t be easily resolved, he made the worst preparations: even if something happened to him, at least his son would survive, sparing the family from being wiped out in one stroke.

That afternoon, Chen Xiao was surprised to see Miss Cabbage arrive. She pedaled her bicycle to the Xu residence, appearing quite familiar with the place, though she wore a displeased expression at the entrance, her face cold—upon seeing Chen Xiao, her cheeks flushed, and she grew nervous.

Chen Xiao’s expression was odd. He glanced at Young Xu, his look tinged with reproach. Had Young Xu, the notorious womanizer, made a move on Miss Cabbage?

Though Young Xu had shown interest in her before…

“Don’t misunderstand,” Young Xu hurried to explain. After Chen Xiao had stripped him for inspection earlier, he was now clad only in a white bathrobe, nothing underneath, making him less confident as he spoke, especially under Chen Xiao’s gaze. He lowered his voice: “I… I bought the fast-food restaurant where she works.”

What?

Chen Xiao eyed him more intently. Young Xu seemed embarrassed, fidgeting before finally confessing, “Well… You said to look after her. Her job at the fast-food place was tough and far away. So I gave her an extra job—she delivers a meal to me every day…”

Delivering takeout?

Chen Xiao’s eyes widened. Young Xu ate well every day—not always a feast, but his home had several high-class chefs. Would he really eat fast-food? And have her deliver it daily?

“You said to look after her, so I placed a long-term order at her restaurant. She delivers once a day. I pay a high delivery fee—she earns a lot more each month. I meant well!” Though his words sounded righteous, Chen Xiao could see through Young Xu’s intentions—he clearly wanted to pursue Miss Cabbage, using this clumsy excuse to create opportunities to interact.

“Why is Chen Xiao here?” Miss Cabbage’s cheeks reddened, her words anxious, as if afraid Chen Xiao might misunderstand.

“Don’t you follow the news?” Young Xu smiled wryly. “Something happened at home—Chen Xiao came to keep me company.”

“Hmph, I wasn’t talking to you.” Miss Cabbage’s face darkened in front of Young Xu. She tossed the meal box at him and held out her hand: “Pay up.”

Young Xu awkwardly realized he was wearing a bathrobe, and smiled sheepishly. “Wait a moment…”

Chen Xiao sighed and asked, “How many days have you been delivering here?”

“Hmph, the second day at the restaurant and this lecher followed me here.” She spread her hands, annoyed. “I can tell what he’s up to, but—hmph! He’s dreaming if he thinks he can win me over with money. I hate those rich kids who try to buy women!”

Chen Xiao gave a helpless, awkward smile. “Actually… Young Xu is a decent guy. If he’s sincere, you could consider…”

“Him?” Miss Cabbage glared—her glare was actually rather cute, but her tone was scornful: “Forget it! I’ve been at KID Academy only a few days, but the list of girls involved with him could form a tour group!”

Just then, Young Xu returned with money, handing it to her, smiling. “Beautiful, how about staying for dinner…”

Seeing her sharp look, he quickly added, “Look, Chen Xiao’s here too. We’re all friends—let’s have a meal together?”

That last line swayed her. She hesitated, then nodded. Young Xu was delighted, immediately summoning the butler to prepare dinner.

“What about the takeout?” Miss Cabbage’s face darkened. “Aren’t you going to eat it?”

“Uh… well,” Young Xu scratched his chin, smiling. “I save it for a midnight snack.” In truth, he would never eat such junk, usually tossing it in the trash—he only wanted the daily opportunity to see her.

The Xu family lived up to its reputation. In less than half an hour, the butler reported dinner was ready. In the lavish dining hall, a sumptuous feast was served. Miss Cabbage intentionally sat far from Young Xu, barely looking at him or speaking. Young Xu, however, was unfazed by her coldness, growing more excited.

At the time, Chen Xiao didn’t understand Young Xu’s cheerful patience. But later, in a private moment, Chen Xiao asked about it. The KID Academy’s Casanova replied: “When a girl gives you the cold shoulder, deliberately ignoring you, it’s not necessarily bad news—it means you’re on her mind! Good impression or bad, you’re still in her thoughts, so you have a chance. If she’s indifferent, neither warm nor cold, just polite—that’s worse! You’re just a stranger. Chasing a girl starts with leaving a strong impression—good or bad, it’s better than none.”

Chen Xiao was impressed. Young Xu’s years of romantic adventures were justified.

Dinner was awkward. Young Xu tried desperately to chat with Miss Cabbage; she, in turn, focused on Chen Xiao, and he, stuck between them, could only talk about trivialities like the weather. The meal lasted over an hour, but Miss Cabbage ate heartily, not neglecting her appetite. Young Xu kept smiling so hard his facial muscles grew sore.

By eight, dessert was served. Young Xu was racking his brains for topics to catch Miss Cabbage’s attention when Chen Xiao suddenly felt a jolt—a surge of adrenaline, a familiar, acute premonition. In past emergencies, this feeling had always been accurate, especially during the previous banquet…

He leapt from his chair, face changing, and shouted in a low voice: “Get down!”

He barely managed to grab Miss Cabbage, dragging her under the table—

A deafening crash followed.

Boom…

In the vast dining hall, all the ornate chandeliers overhead exploded simultaneously! Shattered glass, debris, lamp frames rained down like hail.

Young Xu was still stunned; the chandelier above him tottered, and Chen Xiao lunged, rolling him away just as it crashed where he’d been sitting. Had he been hit, blood and injury would have been inevitable.

Rolling to safety, Young Xu was shaken, not yet able to speak. The room plunged into darkness; outside, chaotic noises and cries rang out.

“Hide under the table!” Chen Xiao shoved Young Xu beneath the sturdy, solid wood table, which offered some protection.

By now, nearly all the mansion’s lights had shattered. Instantly, the entire Xu estate was plunged into pitch blackness.

In the darkness outside, muffled groans and the barking of hounds could be heard—but the sounds were brief, quickly fading.

Someone was breaking in!

Chen Xiao’s heart sank. The bodyguards’ cries grew closer—whoever was coming had moved incredibly fast, overwhelming the guards before they could mount any real defense.

At that moment, the dining room door was smashed open. The butler ran in, panic-stricken, crying, “Young master, run—”

Then the door, along with its frame, was sent flying! The butler was struck and collapsed.

With the door gone, a gaping hole remained. Amid flying debris, Chen Xiao clenched his fists and saw, in the darkness, a huge silhouette—like a monster—slowly entering.

With no lights, Chen Xiao could barely make out the figure’s humanoid shape—nearly three meters tall, a body as massive as a mountain.

The behemoth strode in, crushing debris beneath its feet. One giant hand tore away a chunk of the entry wall.

In the darkness, its breath was loud and rough, like a beast. Chen Xiao could vaguely see two ghostly, glowing eyes atop its enormous head.

He froze, then quickly reacted—heart racing, adrenaline surging. He dragged a heavy wooden chair from the rubble and, with a shout, hurled it at the intruder.

A dull thud—the chair shattered against the figure. Chen Xiao’s blow, powered by his monstrous strength, made the giant grunt and stagger, crashing against the wall. The force shook the house; debris rained from the ceiling.

“Hmph!”

The monster endured Chen Xiao’s heavy strike—enough to flip a car—but only steadied himself against the wall and stood up, shaking his head. Then a hoarse, deep voice sounded: “So… another power-type. Haha! I love fighting power-types!”

Suddenly, a gust of wind rushed at Chen Xiao! He dodged desperately; a giant fist grazed his head, the wind stinging his skin.

Boom!

The wall behind Chen Xiao crumbled under the blow, leaving a huge hole three or four meters wide.

But through the gap, moonlight finally seeped in, giving the dark room a faint glow.

With this weak light, Chen Xiao could barely see his foe.

A nearly three-meter-tall giant, with muscles like blocks of stone. His skin had a strange, bluish, stony sheen. His build was not just strong—it was monstrous.

Chen Xiao estimated his foe’s wrist was as thick as his own thigh, his arm broader than his waist.

Standing before him, Chen Xiao was completely engulfed in the giant’s shadow. The face, eyes like lanterns, mouth gaping in a gruesome grin.

Chen Xiao gritted his teeth, retreated two steps, and wrenched a steel rod from the broken wall, snapping it and wielding it like a weapon, shouting as he swung it at the giant.

The monster simply raised a hand to block; the steel rod struck his arm, and the hardness made Chen Xiao’s palm numb. Sparks flew from the impact.

Damn! How was this monster’s skin so tough?

The giant grabbed the steel rod and yanked it hard. Even with Chen Xiao’s strength, he couldn’t hold on—the rod was snatched away effortlessly.

In the giant’s hand, the rod seemed as thin as a toothpick. With a sneer, he twisted it between two fingers, turning it into a coil.

“Is that all the strength you have?” The monster laughed—a booming, mocking sound. “So you’re the power-type rookie from the service club Qiu Yun mentioned… Hmph, disappointing. Just a low-level power user.”

Outside, shouts erupted as other bodyguards arrived. They’d been attacked earlier, and to Chen Xiao’s surprise, it wasn’t Qiu Yun but this brute. Unable to resist, some ran to fetch guns.

Now, four or five bodyguards rushed in, raising their firearms and firing at the giant.

Gunshots echoed, but the monster only laughed, raising his arm to shield his eyes. Bullets peppered his body, but merely sparked on his skin.

Soon, the bodyguards’ magazines were empty. The giant laughed, picked up a massive sideboard, and hurled it at them, sending several bodyguards bleeding to the floor.

The monster, still laughing, threw a punch at Chen Xiao.

Too close to dodge—behind him was the table where Young Xu and Miss Cabbage hid. He could only grit his teeth, raising his arms with all his strength to block—

Boom!

It felt not like being punched, but struck by a pile driver. The force left him dizzy, blood pouring from his nose and mouth, bones creaking under the strain.

That single punch—clearly, this monster’s strength far surpassed his own.

Crash!

The giant kicked Chen Xiao, sending him flying into the wall. The impact cracked the wall, embedding him deeply. The monster glanced at Chen Xiao. “Service club rookie, remember my name: I am Black Knight—Tyrannosaurus Rex!”

Chen Xiao, stuck in the wall, his body almost spent from the punch, pain everywhere, could only sigh inwardly…

Such a terrifying foe—he truly lived up to the name Tyrannosaurus.

Desperately, he could only watch as Tyrannosaurus approached the table, lifting it effortlessly.

But then—

Chen Xiao was stunned!

Under the table, there was no sign of Miss Cabbage or Young Xu!

He had clearly hidden them there just moments before! The room had only one entrance, and though spacious, had no other hiding places…

Where had they gone?

Tyrannosaurus roared, “Where are they? Where’s that Xu brat?”

He bellowed, raising both fists and smashing the floor. The house shook, and a deep pit formed. No secret passage beneath, but… where were they?

As Chen Xiao stared, dumbfounded, a faint voice reached his ear.

“Chen Xiao… can you move?”

It was Miss Cabbage’s voice. Chen Xiao strained to look around, but saw no one.

“Don’t speak out—I’m right beside you… you can’t see me,” Miss Cabbage whispered.
