Chapter Thirteen: Purification
Chapter Thirteen: [Purification]
Hei Qi's expression twisted in an instant. She seemed to want to reach out and grab something, but as the test tube shattered before her eyes, a look of indescribable terror flashed across her gaze! Then she let out a shrill scream, her body recoiling as if electrified—she sprang back with a desperate force… Her panic-stricken face betrayed an extreme fear of the blue liquid now exposed to the air! What began as a startled scream quickly morphed into pure terror and panic.
The azure liquid, once released, seemed to dissipate in a single heartbeat. The moment it touched the air, it transformed into a light blue mist, merging joyfully and wildly with the atmosphere…
The speed at which it spread was almost unimaginable!
In the span of a single breath, Hei Qi, like a startled rabbit, leapt to the far side of the living room, seemingly intent on escaping through the shattered window. Yet for all her agility, she could not outpace the encroaching blue mist!
The blue vapor appeared to possess a subtle, uncanny awareness, as if it were drawn straight to Hei Qi, as though she carried something on her that was irresistibly attractive to it…
A wisp of the blue mist quickly settled on the hand Hei Qi had exposed to the air. She shrieked in pain as if burned by fire. Instantly, the veins beneath the skin of her hand bulged to the surface, as if countless fine vessels were about to burst!
The swelling veins began to crawl up her neck as well…
Within a few breaths, the powerful Hei Qi seemed utterly drained of strength. Her body slumped to the floor, limp, her once-beautiful face now traced with a network of prominent veins…
Chen Xiao had already collapsed to the ground, watching in shock as the intruder underwent a horrifying transformation. In his astonishment, a fierce burning sensation flared on his own palm!
Looking down, he saw the blue residue from the shattered test tube had seeped into his wound. The cut, which had been bleeding, now showed a faint blue spreading beneath the skin. Instinctively, he tried to rub it away, but the color seemed to have already penetrated deep into his flesh—it would not come off no matter what he did.
Very soon, Chen Xiao realized his entire hand had lost all sensation—not mere numbness, but a complete absence of feeling, as though the hand no longer existed! The sensation rapidly spread from his palm to his wrist and forearm. Panic set in, but he was powerless to stop it!
At last, his strength failed completely. He collapsed, transformed into little more than a husk, lying helplessly as even the muscles on his face refused to obey; his mouth hung open, and drool trickled out, beyond his control.
The blue mist still drifted through the room.
Chen Xiao could only watch as the black-clad woman lay a few meters away. Fortunately, her horrifying state did not last long. Soon, the bulging veins on her face, neck, and wrists receded, but now a blue vapor rose anew from her body—as if some essence within her had evaporated!
The atmosphere was eerily strange. Helpless, Chen Xiao watched as the blue mist, having found its next target, gleefully surged toward him—drawn as though by magnetism, like iron filings to a lodestone, it enveloped him in a frenzy…
Though he could not move, Chen Xiao felt as if he were running a high fever, his senses dulled and sluggish, but within him, a subtle awareness began to emerge—he sensed a momentous change taking place.
The transformation was real, not a figment of his fevered mind. Had there been a microscope present, one could have witnessed his cells rupturing and recombining at dizzying speed, aligning into strange new patterns. The nuclei within them underwent fission, unleashing a mysterious force with every heartbeat, every muscle, every drop of blood, every follicle…
Gradually, the silence in his chest gave way to the steady resurgence of his heartbeat. Time seemed to stretch on interminably as Chen Xiao struggled to keep his eyes open, his surroundings growing ever more sluggish, his ears ringing with phantom sounds, as if eerie voices whispered from every corner…
He thought he could move—starting with the tip of a finger—but it felt as though some heavy burden weighed down his entire body, leaving every sensation painfully slow.
At that moment, he suddenly heard a familiar sound—the door to his home!
The door opened, and someone entered slowly. The newcomer wore black leather, dressed almost identically to the woman before—even down to the same earpiece and ocular lens.
Chen Xiao’s vision blurred and wavered as he struggled to focus. He could barely make out the figure; it seemed to be another woman.
His only thought: Another one!
Struggling, he braced against the wall, trying to stand. The woman first saw Hei Qi lying unconscious on the floor and gasped, then her gaze fell on Chen Xiao, and she strode quickly toward him, hand outstretched…
Chen Xiao tried to resist, feebly raising his hand to push her away, but his movements were too slow to be of any use. Anxiety filled him. Yet just then, a strange force within him sparked a sudden inspiration…
It was as if, with a single thought, that power burst forth…
Bang!
He raised both hands, and from his palms erupted a blast of force! The distorted shockwave struck the intruder squarely, sending her flying back with a startled cry—she crashed heavily into the refrigerator by the kitchen, denting the metal door.
Chen Xiao was dumbfounded.
He looked at his hands in disbelief, his mind clouded…
How did I do that?
How did I do that?
The woman he had hurled across the room struggled to her feet. She looked much like Hei Qi, but her hair was longer, and her face, though similar, appeared older. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth, yet she forced herself up and walked toward Chen Xiao, pain evident in her eyes.
"Don’t… come any closer…” Chen Xiao’s voice was weak, and a wave of exhaustion washed over him, making it nearly impossible to lift his arms.
The woman approached, her features finally coming into focus. Her gaze held no malice.
“Chen Xiao… it’s me, the one who called you…” Her voice, though distant and faint, reached his ears.
But he caught the next words clearly and finally relaxed, his arms falling limply to his sides.
“I am Hei San, the one who entrusted Yaya to you—Three! I am your mother’s friend!”
Chen Xiao lost consciousness. Before he faded, he hazily saw several more figures entering through his front door, each carrying strange instruments…
For most people in the world, it was just another ordinary night. But for the eighteen-year-old boy, it was a nightmare.
In his long unconsciousness, he dreamed countless dreams, each one tied to his parents. Every embrace from his father, every glance from his mother, and every meeting that ended with the deep worry in her eyes, the contemplative look behind his father’s glasses.
Details he once overlooked now flashed before his mind, clear as day.
He dreamed of being sixteen, standing at the airport, waiting for his parents’ ashes to arrive by plane. He remembered silently carrying the urn home, not uttering a word, not shedding a single tear, simply staring blankly out the window.
Perhaps that was when maturity truly began.
—That day, Chen Xiao told himself so.
He remembered it had rained.
…
……
And then, he awoke.
As his eyelids fluttered open, the brightness of the room made it hard for Chen Xiao to adjust. He instinctively tried to raise his hand to shield his face, only to discover in astonishment that all his wounds, no matter how small or severe, had miraculously vanished!
“You’re safe now. No one will hurt you again.” Chen Xiao heard a voice, sincere and full of care.
