Chapter Four: Discharge?
Chapter Four: Discharge?
For the first time in his life, Chen Xiao began to resent his own formidable mental resilience. Because at this moment, as he gazed at Ya Ya, who was enveloped in a shroud of blue electricity—he genuinely wished he could simply faint away and be done with it!
"I'm really starting to wonder if there are ghosts in this world. I used to be a staunch atheist," Chen Xiao muttered as he took two steps back, collapsed heavily into a chair, and stared blankly at Ya Ya.
But then, as if suddenly recalling something, he leapt up, dashed to the light switch, and turned off the lamp.
Otherwise, with the entire block shrouded in darkness and only his apartment illuminated, wouldn't that look suspicious if anyone noticed?
"Did I do something wrong?" Ya Ya turned to him. Though the room was now dark, her entire figure remained bathed in a halo of blue, electric light.
"It's not that you did anything wrong..." Chen Xiao opened his mouth, then took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair. "Just... give me a moment. My mind is a mess, I feel a bit dizzy..."
Ya Ya watched him in silence for a while, then quietly walked over to his side. Cloaked in blue light, her face showed a faint trace of concern. "Are you malfunctioning?"
Malfunctioning...
Chen Xiao looked up at her, hesitated, and asked, "Are you... an alien?"
"What's an alien?"
"Never mind!" Chen Xiao felt utterly defeated.
As he drifted into his thoughts, Ya Ya's hand had already touched his arm. He jumped, but then noticed he didn't feel any electric shock. Relieved, he looked at her, curiosity taking over. "Just now..."
He pointed to the kitchen, then at the ceiling light, then at the glowing Ya Ya, and swallowed. "How did you do that?"
"They said I can control energy," Ya Ya replied, gazing at him.
"They? Who are they?" Chen Xiao felt like he was finally getting the hang of talking to her.
"They..." Ya Ya suddenly shuddered, a faint hint of fear flickering in her blue eyes. "I don't like them."
Chen Xiao was struck by a thought. He jumped up from his chair, rushed into his bedroom, rummaged in a drawer until he found a photo of his parents, and hurried back to Ya Ya, his tone a little agitated. "Look at these two people—do you know them?"
Ya Ya glanced at the photo curiously, thought for a moment, and answered, "No."
No? But you’re the most precious legacy my parents left me! They sent you here—how could you not know them?!
"Are you sure?" Chen Xiao asked, skeptical.
Ya Ya spoke with certainty. Though her voice was still soft and gentle, her tone was firm. "I couldn't be mistaken. I have an excellent memory. Anything I've seen, I never forget."
A photographic memory?
Apart from reading about it in online novels, Chen Xiao had never heard of anyone with such an ability.
But then again... this girl could discharge electricity. Compared to that, a photographic memory didn't seem so extraordinary.
He thought for a moment. "Do you remember how you ended up in that cabinet—uh, that bio-pod?" He pointed to the "freezer" in the living room.
"I don't know," Ya Ya tilted her head, looking a bit lost. "I was resting in my own bio-pod, and when I woke up, I was here."
Resting... she probably means sleeping.
"You must remember something," Chen Xiao said, scratching his head in frustration.
Just then, he heard her stomach growl.
"Ah! Let's eat first! Maybe once you’re full, you’ll remember something." Chen Xiao hurried to the microwave, retrieved the instant noodles—and then encountered another problem. She didn’t seem to know how to use chopsticks.
Well, judging by her hair and eye color, she probably wasn't from the East, so not knowing how to use chopsticks wasn’t surprising. But she didn’t seem to know how to use a fork and knife, either.
"Here, eat," Chen Xiao kindly fetched a fork from the cupboard.
"What does 'eat' mean?" Ya Ya looked at him with those innocent eyes.
"Eat... Don’t tell me you’ve never eaten before?" Chen Xiao gritted his teeth and demonstrated: "Eating is putting food in your mouth, chewing, swallowing, to replenish your body’s... um, energy! Yes, to replenish your energy!"
"I’ve never done it that way," Ya Ya stared blankly at the steaming noodles and the fork, clearly at a loss.
"How did you do it before?" Chen Xiao was curious—surely even a clone needed to eat, didn’t they?
Then, Ya Ya described her experience.
She had truly never eaten food before!
"Infusion tubes?" Chen Xiao’s eyes widened.
Immediately, his mind conjured a wicked image: a cold research laboratory, a beautiful girl with pure, innocent eyes, her body pierced with dozens of thin tubes like IV drips in a hospital, surrounded by a group of sinister men in white coats grinning maliciously...
He shook his head vigorously to dispel the thought.
At last, through patient instruction, he managed to teach Ya Ya how to use chopsticks to eat noodles. Watching such a beauty clumsily slurp noodles with chopsticks, Chen Xiao felt a sudden sense of accomplishment.
But the longer he watched, the more flustered he became. Heart thumping, his face flushed—no, he really should find her something to wear.
Though there were no women’s clothes at home, fortunately, he had an extra bathrobe. That would have to do for now; he could buy something more suitable tomorrow.
The entire evening, Chen Xiao tried to converse with Ya Ya, but ultimately came to a conclusion: this girl seemed to know nothing about anything. All the basic knowledge any normal person should have, she had no concept of. It was as if she had grown up in a completely isolated environment, cut off from the outside world.
Their conversation continued late into the night, until nearly dawn when Chen Xiao, exhausted from a day’s work, finally arranged for Ya Ya to sleep in the guest room and collapsed into bed himself.
Though plagued by questions, he soon drifted off to sleep.
He dreamed many strange dreams, most of them related to his parents. That night, in his dreams, countless memories of his parents resurfaced—some he thought he’d long forgotten, yet in his dreams, every detail was vivid and clear.
He had thought that, after two years, his heart had healed from the pain. But in his dreams, the sorrow felt as raw and real as ever.
The next morning, he awoke to find his pillow damp. Wiping his eyes, he found traces of tears.
Dad, Mom... what were you thinking? On my eighteenth birthday, you send me a “gift” like this...
What secrets were you hiding?
Chen Xiao sat up in bed, lost in thought, and slowly sorted through his emotions.
First, the girl was definitely closely connected to his parents! Whether she was an alien, a clone, or even—Chen Xiao had even wondered—a hyper-realistic robot, whatever the case, this girl clearly held many secrets related to his family.
It was Sunday, his day off from the fast food job. After getting up and seeing the date on the calendar, he could only force a wry smile: May sixth—his birthday—had come and gone just like that.
He stepped out of his bedroom, gently pushed open the guest room door, and was about to call Ya Ya when he saw the bed was empty!
Where was she?!
Startled, Chen Xiao hurried into the living room and looked around.
There she was—Ya Ya hadn’t run off. Instead...
Inside the big freezer in the living room, Ya Ya lay quietly, the lid closed, eyes shut, still lost in sweet dreams.
Chen Xiao walked over, pulled open the curtains, and gently knocked on the freezer lid. Ya Ya opened her eyes, saw him, and smiled softly.
The morning sun streamed through the curtains, bathing Ya Ya in its light. Her delicate features became even more vivid and beautiful, so much so that Chen Xiao found himself a little dazed.
He blushed, instinctively turning away. "Get up. This afternoon, we’ll go out and buy you some things."
